Zamfara 2027: Abubakar’s shadow rule threatens ADC cohesion as ex-IGP parade as party leader despite resignation

Published

on

Despite officially resigning as leader of the Zamfara State chapter of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), IGP (Rtd) MD Abubakar continues to wield influence within the party, sources say.

Abubakar’s resignation, formalized in a letter addressed to party officials, stated:

“This is to notify you of my decision to resign from my position as Leader of the Zamfara State Chapter of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), and also to inform you that I will no longer participate in any activities of the party effective immediately.”
— IGP (Rtd) MD Abubakar PhD, CFR, NPM, Mni, FCA, psc

However, insiders allege that Abubakar still makes key decisions in the party, effectively guiding its direction behind the scenes. Political observers believe this dual role resigned in name but influential in practice could destabilize ADC’s operations in the state, especially as the party gears up for the 2027 elections.

Speculation is rife that Abubakar is angling for a ministerial appointment from the ruling APC government, a move that could explain his continued clandestine involvement in ADC affairs. Sources warn that this dynamic risks undermining the party’s grassroots strategy and cohesion.

Party stakeholders are reportedly concerned that Abubakar’s lingering presence may create confusion over leadership, hamper decision-making, and jeopardize ADC’s efforts to consolidate support in Zamfara.

As ADC seeks to establish itself as a credible opposition force in the state, the challenge posed by a resigned leader still pulling strings could have far-reaching implications for the party’s political strategy.
