BREAKING: FG amends charges against ex-AGF Malami, drops terrorism financing allegation
The Federal Government has amended the charges filed against former Attorney-General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami, and his son, Abdulaziz, removing the allegation of terrorism financing.
At Wednesday’s court session, Akinlolu Kehinde, counsel to the Department of State Services (DSS), informed the court of the amendment and applied for the substitution of the earlier charge.
The fresh charge now centres on alleged illegal possession of firearms.
Counsel to the defendants, Shaibu Aruwa, confirmed that his clients had been served with the amended charge and agreed that it be read in open court.
Following the reading of the charge, both defendants pleaded not guilty.
Justice Joyce Abdulmalik, who presided over the matter, ordered that the defendants continue on the bail terms earlier granted to them on February 27.
The court subsequently adjourned the case to May 26 and June 15 for trial.
According to the amended charge, the prosecution alleged that firearms and live cartridges were recovered from Malami’s residence in Birnin Kebbi.
Malami and his son were first arraigned by the DSS on February 3 on a five-count charge bordering on alleged terrorism financing and illegal possession of firearms.
The DSS had earlier accused the former AGF of refusing to prosecute terrorism financiers whose case files were allegedly forwarded to the Office of the Attorney-General for action.
On February 27, the former minister and his son were each granted bail in the sum of N200 million with two sureties in like sum.
