Senate Rejig: ADC’s Tony Nwoye emerges Minority Whip as defections tilt balance toward APC

The Nigerian Senate has appointed Tony Nwoye as the new Minority Whip following a wave of defections that reshaped the opposition ranks in the upper legislative chamber.

Nwoye’s appointment was confirmed after he was unanimously selected by the Senate minority caucus to fill the vacancy created by the defection of his predecessor, Senator Osita Ngwu, who recently left the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for the All Progressives Congress (APC).

The development was formally announced on the floor of the Senate by Senate President Godswill Akpabio, who read Ngwu’s defection letter citing alignment with political interests in Enugu State and support for President Bola Tinubu’s administration.

Ngwu had stated that his decision was motivated by a desire to work closely with Enugu State Governor Peter Mbah and what he described as the APC’s stability.

Senator Nwoye, who currently represents Anambra North Senatorial District, was elected in 2023 on the platform of the Labour Party (LP) before moving to the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in 2025.

His emergence as Minority Whip comes amid broader political realignments within the National Assembly, where several lawmakers have recently switched parties.

Among the latest defections is Senator Anthony Siyako Yaro of Gombe South, who moved from the PDP to the APC, citing internal party crises. Similarly, Senator Aliyu Wadada, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Public Accounts, also formally defected from the Social Democratic Party (SDP) to the APC.

Wadada, who has reportedly been endorsed as the APC consensus governorship candidate for Nasarawa State ahead of the 2027 elections, said his formal defection process was concluded on Wednesday.

Reacting to the growing wave of defections, Senator Adams Oshiomhole praised the lawmakers, describing their decisions as constitutional and voluntary, while attributing the trend to growing confidence in the ruling party.

With the latest movements, APC’s numerical strength in the Senate has reportedly risen to 91 lawmakers, further consolidating its dominance in the upper chamber ahead of the 2027 elections.
