Ex-President Shehu Shagari’s last surviving wife, Hajiya Saratu, dies at 89
The family of former Nigerian President Shehu Shagari has announced the passing of his last surviving wife, Hajiya Saratu Shehu Shagari. She died on Monday at the age of 89 after a prolonged illness.
The announcement was contained in a statement signed by Capt. Bala Shagari, the late President’s eldest son and Sarkin Mafaran Shagari.
According to the statement, Hajiya Saratu passed away around 3 p.m. on Monday. Burial arrangements, the family added, would be announced in due course.
“With deep sorrow, we announce the passing of Hajiya Saratu Shagari, the last surviving wife of former President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Alhaji Shehu Shagari, GCFR, Turakin Sokoto,” the statement read.
Capt. Bala Shagari described her as “an embodiment of grace, humility, and quiet strength, who lived a life of dignity.”
Hajiya Saratu was widely respected for her humility and support during her husband’s presidency from 1979 to 1983, leaving behind a legacy of grace and service.
