Armed men attack orphanage in Kogi, abduct 23 pupils

Suspected bandits have abducted 23 pupils and the wife of a school proprietor after invading an unregistered orphanage and school facility in Zariagi, along the Kabba Junction axis of Lokoja, in Kogi State.

Security sources confirmed that 15 of the abducted children have since been rescued following a swift response by security operatives, while efforts are ongoing to free the remaining eight victims and track down the attackers.

The facility, identified as Dahallukitab Group of Schools, was reportedly operating in a remote and bushy area without official registration or regulatory approval.

Reacting to the incident, the Kogi State Government condemned the attack, describing it as a serious security breach and warning against the operation of unregistered institutions in isolated locations.

Commissioner for Information and Communications, Kingsley Femi Fanwo, said preliminary reports showed that the gunmen struck late on Sunday before whisking away the victims.

He explained that security agencies, including the Nigeria Police Force, quickly mobilised and launched a coordinated rescue operation that led to the recovery of 15 pupils.

The government commended the operatives for their “gallantry and prompt response,” adding that efforts are still ongoing to secure the release of the remaining abductees.

Authorities also used the incident to caution operators of schools and orphanages against running facilities in remote areas without proper registration and oversight, warning that such practices expose children and staff to avoidable security risks.

The state government reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding lives and property, stating that security operations remain active to restore full control and ensure the perpetrators are brought to justice.
