President Bola Tinubu has approved the removal of Mr Saidu Mohammed as the Chief Executive of the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA).

The decision was disclosed in a statement issued by the President’s spokesman, Bayo Onanuga, who said the removal was carried out “in the public interest.”

According to the statement, the President has nominated Mr Rabiu Abdullahi Umar as the new Chief Executive of the regulatory agency, subject to confirmation by the Senate.

The presidency said the move, made pursuant to the Petroleum Industry Act 2021, is aimed at strengthening regulatory efficiency in the midstream and downstream petroleum sectors in line with the administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda.

Mr Umar is described as an experienced executive with over 25 years of professional experience spanning the energy, manufacturing, and infrastructure sectors. He is credited with expertise in strategic leadership, operational transformation, and large-scale project delivery.

He holds a degree in Accounting from Bayero University and is also an alumnus of Harvard Business School.

Pending his confirmation by the Senate, the most senior official within the NMDPRA is expected to oversee the agency’s operations in an acting capacity.

President Tinubu expressed appreciation to the outgoing Chief Executive for his service and wished him success in his future endeavours.

“The President remains committed to ensuring capable leadership in key regulatory institutions to advance energy security, sector reform, and sustainable economic growth,” the statement added.
