Barely 24 hours after Workers’ Day, fire guts NLC secretariat in Sokoto, destroys vital documents
A devastating fire has razed the Sokoto State secretariat of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), destroying property and critical documents accumulated over several decades.
The incident, which occurred in the early hours of Saturday, reportedly broke out around 3:00 a.m., leaving the facility completely gutted.
Confirming the development, the state NLC Secretary, Hamisu Hussaini Hamisu, attributed the cause of the fire to a suspected electrical fault.
He disclosed that the inferno consumed office equipment, including computers, printers, refrigerators, televisions and furniture, as well as vital records spanning more than 30 years.
According to him, the lone security guard on duty was unable to contain the fire as it spread rapidly across the building.
Sources said firefighters arrived at the scene about an hour after the outbreak and eventually brought the situation under control.
The extent of the damage has been described as total, with no recoverable item from the secretariat.
The incident has thrown members of the council into mourning, as efforts are expected to commence towards rebuilding the destroyed facility and restoring lost institutional records.
