University community in tears as three UNICROSS students, staff die in road crash
The University of Cross River State (UNICROSS) has been thrown into mourning following a tragic road accident that claimed the lives of three students and one staff member while returning from an official assignment in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State.
According to a statement from the university management, the victims were among a group of 24 students and a staff member who were involved in the accident at Odukpani Local Government Area of Cross River State.
The deceased have been identified as Comrade Solomon Uya, Director of Sports of the Students’ Union Government; Comrade Lucky Erim, a Chemistry student and President of the Faculty of Physical Sciences Students’ Association; Comrade Favour Darlington of the Department of Educational Management; and Mr. Anthony Arikpo, the driver and a staff member of the institution.
The university confirmed that survivors of the crash are currently receiving medical attention in various hospitals, while expressing deep sorrow over the loss.
UNICROSS Vice Chancellor, Professor Francisca Bassey, alongside the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academic), Professor Stella Maris-Okey, reportedly visited the injured students in hospital and assured them of the institution’s full support for their recovery.
In the statement signed by the Public Relations Officer, Mr. Onen Ebri Onen, the university described the incident as devastating and extended condolences to the bereaved families, praying for the repose of the souls of the deceased and the speedy recovery of those injured.
The management added that it remains committed to supporting affected students and staff as the institution grapples with the tragedy.
