BREAKING: Crisis resolved as Kano NDC chairman makes u-turn, agrees to work with Kwankwaso

The National Democratic Congress (National Democratic Congress) has resolved its leadership dispute in Kano State, reaffirming Hon. Husaini Isah Mai Riga as the substantive state chairman following tensions triggered by the entry of former Kano State Governor, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso.

The disagreement began after Kwankwaso’s formal involvement in the party, which sparked internal resistance and questions over the existing state leadership structure. Mai Riga had strongly opposed attempts to remove him, insisting that his mandate remained valid and could only be altered through due process.

The crisis prompted intervention from the party’s national leadership, which convened a reconciliation meeting on Tuesday chaired by Sen. Seriake Dickson. The meeting also had in attendance Kwankwaso, NDC Northwest vice chairman Engr. Muhammad Sabo Bakin Zuwo, and other senior stakeholders.

At the end of the deliberations, the party resolved to retain Mai Riga as Kano State chairman, while also accommodating Kwankwaso within the state structure in what insiders described as a negotiated power balance.

Party sources further disclosed that Kwankwaso was allocated significant influence within the structure as part of the settlement, while Mai Riga remained in charge of the state executive leadership.

Speaking after the meeting, Mai Riga expressed appreciation to the party leadership and supporters, describing the outcome as a product of wisdom and internal consultation. He also apologised to anyone offended during the dispute, noting that unity had become the priority.

He added that an internal arrangement had been reached allocating 60 percent of the state structure to Kwankwaso’s bloc, while he retains his position as chairman.

The resolution is expected to stabilise the Kano chapter as the party continues its broader national reorganisation ahead of future elections.
