NNPP loses senate representation as Senator Hanga defects to NDC

The New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) has lost its remaining seat in the Nigerian Senate following the defection of Senator Rufai Hanga (Kano Central) to the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC).

The development was announced on Tuesday after Senate President Godswill Akpabio formally read Hanga’s defection letter during plenary.

In the letter, Hanga attributed his decision to unresolved internal crises within the NNPP, citing factional disputes and conflicting leadership directions that, according to him, had made effective legislative engagement difficult.

He said the instability within the party’s structure had affected his ability to carry out his duties, adding that consultations with his constituents and political stakeholders influenced his move to the NDC, which he described as more aligned with his political direction and governance priorities.

With the defection, the NNPP now has no representation in the Senate. The updated composition of the upper chamber is APC – 89, ADC – 7, PDP – 4, NDC – 3, APGA – 1, NNPP – 0, Accord – 1, and Labour Party – 1.
