EXCLUSIVE: Tinubu drops Femi Fani-Kayo as Ambassador to Germany, picks Ita Enang as replacement

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has appointed Senator Ita Solomon Enang as Nigeria’s Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to the Federal Republic of Germany, marking a key diplomatic reshuffle as Nigeria strengthens ties with Europe’s largest economy.

Senator Enang, a former presidential aide and three-term lawmaker, is expected to assume duties at the Nigerian Embassy in Berlin in the coming weeks. He will oversee Nigeria’s diplomatic engagement with Germany in areas such as trade, renewable energy, vocational training, and technology cooperation.

However, the appointment has also drawn attention following earlier unconfirmed reports circulating in political and media spaces suggesting that former Minister of Aviation, Femi Fani-Kayode, was initially considered or nominated for the same ambassadorial position before being dropped.

Those reports, which have not been officially verified by the Presidency or the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, further alleged that Enang’s appointment followed internal adjustments linked to controversies surrounding the earlier consideration.

While no official statement has confirmed any nomination or withdrawal involving Fani-Kayode, the final appointment of Enang now stands as the government’s confirmed choice for the strategic posting in Berlin.

Nigeria and Germany have maintained diplomatic relations since 1960, with cooperation expanding in recent years through Germany’s development agency GIZ, particularly in renewable energy, migration management, and technical training.

As ambassador, Enang is expected to present his letters of credence to German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier before formally commencing his duties.

The development forms part of President Tinubu’s broader effort to reposition Nigeria’s foreign missions and deepen international economic partnerships.
