Ex-Ondo Gov Olusegun Mimiko defects to APC, backs Tinubu’s re-election
Former Ondo State governor, Olusegun Mimiko, has officially defected to the All Progressives Congress, declaring support for the re-election bid of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Mimiko, the first governor in Ondo State’s history to complete two terms in office, announced his decision at the APC Secretariat in Ondo City, where he was formally received by the state chairman, Kolawole Babatunde, alongside party leaders and supporters.
His defection comes months after several of his loyalists joined the ruling party in 2025, a move widely interpreted as preparations for his eventual alignment with the APC.
Speaking during the event, Mimiko said his decision was motivated by the need to support Tinubu’s administration, which he described as focused on national development and economic transformation.
According to him, the current government has placed Nigeria on the path of rapid growth and progress.
Welcoming the former governor into the party, Babatunde described the development as a major political gain for the APC in Ondo State.
He said Mimiko’s political experience, grassroots influence and popularity would further strengthen the party’s structure and electoral chances in future elections within the state and beyond.
Political observers believe the former governor’s entry into the APC could reshape political alignments in Ondo State ahead of the next election cycle.
