BREAKING: EFCC arrests ex-Power minister Saleh Mamman after 75-year jail sentence
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has arrested former Minister of Power, Saleh Mamman, following his recent conviction and sentencing by the Federal High Court in Abuja over alleged financial misappropriation.
EFCC Chairman, Ola Olukoyede, confirmed that Mamman was arrested at about 3:30 a.m. on Tuesday in Kaduna State alongside two other individuals allegedly found in his company.
According to the anti-graft agency, the arrest followed a court order directing security agencies to apprehend the former minister after his conviction.
Olukoyede disclosed that the residence where Mamman was arrested is now under investigation, adding that the two individuals picked up with him are being interrogated for possible links to efforts to shield him from arrest.
The EFCC said the arrest marks the beginning of enforcement of the judgment delivered by the Federal High Court, Abuja, which convicted Mamman on charges of money laundering and diversion of funds linked to major power projects.
The court had earlier sentenced him to 75 years in prison over a ₦33.8 billion fraud case involving the Zungeru and Mambilla hydroelectric power projects.
The judgment, delivered by Justice James Omotosho, found Mamman guilty on a 12-count charge of conspiracy and money laundering.
It also ordered that the sentence take effect from the date of his arrest, paving the way for his immediate detention following his re-arrest.
Mamman was convicted in absentia after being found guilty on all counts filed by the EFCC, with the court also directing security agencies, including Interpol, to track and arrest him wherever he was found.
The EFCC said further investigation is ongoing into the circumstances surrounding his arrest and the role of those found with him.
