2027 Polls: Peter Obi arrives NDC secretariat for presidential screening

Former Anambra State Governor, Peter Obi, on Tuesday evening arrived at the national secretariat of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) in Abuja for the party’s presidential screening exercise ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Obi, who is widely regarded as a frontrunner within the party’s emerging political structure, arrived at the secretariat at about 6:45pm amid growing speculation that he may eventually emerge as the party’s consensus presidential candidate.

He was accompanied by the Senator representing Anambra Central, Victor Umeh, as he submitted his Expression of Interest and Nomination forms to members of the screening team shortly after arriving.

Dressed in his trademark black kaftan and matching cap, Obi arrived about 20 minutes after the Chairman of the screening committee, Senator Sam Egwu, had entered the venue.

The development comes amid heightened political speculation following reports that the NDC suspended the sale of presidential nomination forms, while extending the deadline for other elective positions such as governorship, Senate and House of Representatives.

In recent days, Obi has been widely tipped as the leading contender for the party’s presidential ticket, although both the party leadership and his camp have publicly denied any formal consensus arrangement.

The screening committee is chaired by former Ebonyi State Governor and ex-lawmaker, Senator Sam Egwu, who was recently appointed alongside other political figures and professionals to oversee the screening of aspirants ahead of the 2027 polls.

Other members of the committee include party stalwarts such as Buba Galadima, Ikeddy Isiguzo, Wole Adedayo, Udenta Udenta, and Henry Obaze, among others.

The NDC says the committee is tasked with ensuring a transparent, credible and merit-based selection process for all aspirants across elective positions ahead of the next general elections.
