Nigeria leads Africa in oil output but fails OPEC quota for third month
Nigeria’s crude oil production for October remained below the 1.5 million barrels per day (bpd) quota set by the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC), according to the group’s latest monthly report released on Tuesday.
OPEC said the country produced 1.4 million bpd in October, representing a marginal 0.72 percent increase from the 1.39 million bpd recorded in September.
However, this still marks the third consecutive month Nigeria failed to meet its assigned production quota.
In previous months, Nigeria drilled 1.39 million bpd in September and 1.43 million bpd in August. OPEC noted that the figures were based on direct communications with Nigerian authorities, adding that its data also comes from secondary sources such as energy intelligence agencies.
Despite the shortfall, Nigeria maintained its position as Africa’s largest oil producer, with Libya trailing at 1.35 million bpd.
OPEC’s secondary data, however, estimated Nigeria’s crude production slightly higher at 1.506 million bpd in October, a 1.01 percent rise from September’s 1.491 million bpd.
“Total DoC crude oil production averaged 43.02 mb/d in October 2025, which is 73 tb/d lower month-on-month,” the oil alliance stated.
Meanwhile, the Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) Limited recently announced that the country remains on course to raise its crude oil output to two million bpd by 2027 and three million bpd by 2030.
The Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC) also disclosed that the 2025 oil licensing bid round will commence on December 1, with the goal of boosting production by an additional one million barrels, according to its chief executive officer, Gbenga Komolafe.
