The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Zamfara State has concluded its senatorial primary election for the Zamfara Central Senatorial District, with Dr. Sanusi Bala Turaki, popularly known as Sarkin Dawaki Maituta, emerging as the party’s candidate unopposed ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The primary election, held on Wednesday at the PDP state secretariat in Lalan Gusau, was supervised by party officials from the PDP national headquarters in Abuja alongside state party leaders.

Delegates and party representatives from the four local government areas that make up Zamfara Central Senatorial District — Gusau, Tsafe, Maru, and Bungudu — unanimously endorsed Sarkin Dawaki as the party’s consensus candidate.

The exercise was overseen by a national party delegation led by Alhaji Ibrahim Dogara, reflecting the significance of Zamfara Central to the PDP’s electoral calculations ahead of the polls.

Speaking shortly after his affirmation, Sarkin Dawaki expressed appreciation to party leaders, delegates, and supporters for the confidence reposed in him.

He described the unanimous endorsement as both an honour and a responsibility, noting that the decision by all four local governments to support his candidacy signalled a collective desire for unity, purposeful leadership, and effective representation.

“I am deeply humbled by the trust and confidence shown in me by the delegates and the people of Zamfara Central. This support is not just a victory for me, but a call to greater service and responsibility,” he said.

The PDP candidate pledged to work towards delivering effective representation at the National Assembly if elected, promising to prioritise the needs of the people and attract meaningful development projects to the zone.

According to him, his emergence should not be seen as a reward, but as a challenge to work harder in addressing issues affecting communities across the senatorial district.

He also assured supporters that his focus would remain on grassroots engagement, economic opportunities, and ensuring that the people of Zamfara Central have a strong and responsive voice in Abuja.

Party officials who monitored the process described the peaceful and consensus-based primary as a reflection of growing unity within the PDP in Zamfara State.

They expressed optimism that the early show of cohesion would strengthen the party’s chances ahead of the general election and reduce internal disputes often associated with party primaries.

With the affirmation concluded, political attention is expected to shift towards the wider contest for the Zamfara Central senatorial seat, regarded as one of the key political battlegrounds in the state.
