Nigeria’s Military deserves national support, says Tinubu at NGE Conference

President Bola Tinubu has commended the men and women of the Nigerian Armed Forces for their unwavering sacrifices in defending the nation, urging Nigerians to show them more support and encouragement.

Speaking at the Nigerian Guild of Editors (NGE) conference in Abuja on Wednesday, Tinubu highlighted the crucial role of the military in safeguarding the country’s territorial integrity despite persistent security threats.

“Yes, we are challenged by terrorism, banditry, and others. We recognise that.”

“Are we doing something about it? Are we inspiring the armed forces? Are we encouraging them to fight? They put their lives on the line to defend the sovereignty of this country. It is our responsibility,” the President said.

His remarks came amid renewed concerns over insecurity in several parts of the country and calls for stronger government action to curb killings by terrorists and bandits.

Earlier this month, U.S. President Donald Trump expressed worry over what he described as the “mass slaughter” of Christians in Nigeria, saying the situation posed an existential threat.

However, the Federal Government appealed for understanding, insisting it is recording progress in the fight against terrorism, especially in the north-east.

Last Thursday, Tinubu reiterated his administration’s commitment to strengthening global cooperation and intensifying efforts to combat terrorism and criminality.

“The task ahead is immense. But we are resolved to move forward with unity and purpose, to defeat terrorism and build a prosperous, inclusive, and resilient Nigeria,” he said.

The Presidency recently reported an 81 per cent drop in terror-related deaths since 2015, attributing the decline to improved counter-insurgency strategies and better collaboration between security agencies and local communities.

According to the statement, more than 13,000 terrorists have been neutralised in the past year, while about 124,000 fighters and their families have surrendered to Nigerian authorities.

It also disclosed that over 2.1 million internally displaced persons have returned home as reconstruction efforts continue in previously affected areas.

“Since 2023, the Federal Government of Nigeria, through enhanced inter-agency cooperation, has vigorously pursued, arrested, eliminated, or successfully convicted terrorists and insurgents responsible for heinous attacks on Nigerian soil.

Since 2024, over 124 terrorists and insurgents have been successfully convicted, while others, including members of the Ansaru leadership and those behind the 2022 Owo Church bombing and Benue’s Yelwata reprisal attacks, are currently facing trial,” the statement read.
