BREAKING: Rangers crowned NPFL champions, match historic nine-title record
Enugu Rangers International FC have secured a record-equalling ninth Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) title after a hard-fought 2–1 win over Ikorodu City FC, further cementing their place in Nigerian football history.
Captain Chidiebere Nwobodo was the hero of the day, scoring in both halves to hand the Flying Antelopes a crucial victory that ultimately decided the title race.
The home side managed to reduce the deficit in the 58th minute through substitute Moses Ali after Rangers goalkeeper Lucky Jimoh failed to deal with a long-range effort, but the visitors held on under pressure to secure all three points.
Rangers finished the season on top of the table with 68 points from 38 matches, narrowly edging out Rivers United, who ended just one point behind after a 3–0 victory over Katsina United on the final day of the season.
The tight finish underscored one of the most competitive NPFL campaigns in recent years, with the title race going down to the wire.
The triumph also marks coach Fidelis Ilechukwu’s second league crown with the Enugu-based side and sees Rangers equal the all-time NPFL record held by Enyimba FC.
With the victory, Rangers and Rivers United will represent Nigeria in next season’s CAF Champions League.
