Former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar, has emerged as the presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress for the 2027 general election.

The party announced the result on Wednesday night through its official X account, confirming that Atiku defeated former Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, and former banker, Mohammed Hayatu-Deen, in the presidential primary election.

According to the final results released by the party:

Atiku Abubakar — 1,855,787 votes

Rotimi Amaechi — 509,397 votes

Mohammed Hayatu-Deen — 180,903 votes

The total votes cast stood at 2,546,457, while the total party membership eligible for the election was put at 3,113,599.

Atiku secured victory with a margin of 1,346,390 votes over Amaechi and defeated Hayatu-Deen by 1,674,884 votes.

The ADC presidential primary process began on May 25, 2026, with party members across the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory participating in the exercise.

The party eventually adopted the direct primary method after its leading aspirants reportedly rejected calls for a consensus arrangement.

The outcome officially positions Atiku as the ADC flag bearer ahead of the 2027 presidential election, setting the stage for what is expected to be a major opposition contest against the ruling All Progressives Congress.
