One person has been killed and seven others injured after an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) exploded along the Bagega–Anka road in Anka Local Government Area of Zamfara State.

The incident occurred at about 6:15 p.m. on Monday when a commercial Volkswagen Golf 3 Wagon travelling from Bagega village to Anka town reportedly ran over the explosive device.

A resident, Aminu Bagega, said the IED was suspected to have been planted by bandits operating in the area.

“The passengers were travelling from Bagega village to Anka town when the device detonated, killing one person on the spot. Seven others sustained varying degrees of injuries and are currently receiving treatment,” he said.

Confirming the incident, the spokesperson of the Zamfara State Police Command, DSP Yazid Abubakar, said the explosion occurred on June 8, 2026, resulting in one death and seven injuries.

According to him, security operatives swiftly responded to the scene, with specialised tactical teams deployed in collaboration with the military to assess the situation, secure the area, and restore normal movement along the road.

Abubakar reaffirmed the commitment of security agencies to tackling banditry and terrorism across the state, noting that operations against criminal elements remain ongoing.

He also urged residents to continue providing credible and actionable intelligence to security agencies, stressing that community support remains crucial in the fight against insecurity.

The latest explosion comes barely a month after another IED blast along the same Bagega–Anka corridor reportedly claimed six lives and injured six others, highlighting growing concerns over the use of explosives by armed groups in parts of Zamfara State.
