PDP elects Kabiru Turaki as National Chairman, Taofeek Arapaja Secretary at Ibadan Convention
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has elected Dr. Kabiru Tanimu Turaki (SAN), a former Minister of Special Duties and Intergovernmental Affairs, as its new National Chairman at the Elective National Convention held at the Lekan Salami Stadium in Ibadan, Oyo State. Ambassador Taofeek Arapaja, former Deputy National Chairman (South), also emerged as the party’s new National Secretary.
The historic convention, which took place from November 15 and extended into the early hours of November 16, brought together more than 3,000 delegates from all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory.
The gathering is seen as a major step toward repositioning the PDP as it prepares for the 2027 general elections.
The electoral process was supervised by Senator Ben Obi, who coordinated the voting in a manner delegates described as transparent, orderly, and reflective of the party’s renewed commitment to internal democracy.
Dr. Turaki’s emergence as National Chairman was almost unanimous, following the withdrawal of his only major contender, Senator Yakubu Lado.
His selection as a consensus candidate has been welcomed by party leaders who believe he represents the stability, experience, and unifying force needed for the PDP’s rebuilding efforts.
The successful outcome of the convention is already being viewed as a turning point for the opposition party, which has been grappling with internal divisions.
The new leadership is expected to chart a fresh path toward unity, discipline, and electoral strength ahead of the next general elections.
