D’Tigers edge Tunisia 84-81 in World Cup qualifiers opener
Nigeria’s senior men’s basketball team, D’Tigers, began their FIBA Basketball World Cup 2027 African Qualifiers campaign with an 84-81 victory over Tunisia in a crucial Group C match played on Thursday in Luanda, Angola.
The win marked a successful competitive debut for newly appointed head coach David Fizdale, who guided the team to victory in his first official game in charge.
D’Tigers took an early lead by winning the opening quarter 23-21, but Tunisia responded in the second quarter with a 23-20 performance to send both sides into halftime level.
Nigeria regained the upper hand after claiming the third quarter 21-19 before holding on in the final quarter with a 20-18 advantage to secure the hard-fought three-point win.
The victory has significantly boosted the team’s chances of progressing in the race for a place at the 2027 FIBA Basketball World Cup in Qatar.
D’Tigers will return to action on Friday against Guinea before concluding the qualifying window against Rwanda on Sunday, with victories in both matches expected to further strengthen their qualification hopes.
