Crisis behind us, Rivers is stable again — Fubara

Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, says the political crisis that rocked the state months ago caused a temporary disruption, but peace has now been fully restored.

Fubara spoke on Sunday during the grand finale of the Python Golf Club’s 6th Ikenna Okafor 2025 Pro-Amateur Golf Championship in Port Harcourt.

According to a statement by his spokesperson, Nelson Chukwudi, and obtained by Very Nigerian the governor said earlier political tensions resulted in about six months of disturbance, but calm has since returned, allowing security agencies to operate effectively.

He accused certain individuals of “weaponising” the situation in a bid to mislead Nigerians. Fubara added that many of the negative reports circulating about the state were exaggerated. “More than half of the things you read in the media are not true,” he said. He noted that worse incidents occur in other states but are not publicised because those states “manage their media better.”

The governor praised the joint security team for improved coordination since normal activities resumed.

He said the free movement enjoyed by golfers and guests during the tournament shows the state is safe.

Fubara promised continued government support for the championship and revealed plans to revive the Governor’s Cup.

He urged visitors to share their positive experiences, stressing that the administration is working hard to rebuild Rivers State’s image.

“Our mission is simple: to change our story, protect our state, and remind everyone that Rivers State is ours and it is safe,” he said.

General Officer Commanding the 6th Division of the Nigerian Army, Emmanuel Emekah, also said the calm atmosphere in the state made it possible to host the tournament.

He noted that the successful event shows Rivers has regained stability.

On March 18, President Bola Tinubu declared emergency rule in the state after a prolonged political crisis.

The president also suspended the governor, his deputy, and members of the Rivers House of Assembly for an initial six months.
