Mary Habila had a boyfriend but was like a daughter to me; before her death, she had a nosebleed, Umahi says
Minister of Works, David Umahi, has provided fresh details surrounding the death of Mary Habila, the nurse who died at his residence in Uburu, Ebonyi State, on June 27, 2026.
Habila, an employee of the David Umahi Federal University Teaching Hospital in Ebonyi State, died at the minister’s residence, sparking nationwide calls for an independent investigation into the circumstances surrounding her death.
Addressing journalists on Thursday, Umahi described the deceased as being like a daughter to him and his family.
According to the minister, Habila worked closely with him for about three years.
Umahi clarified that Habila was a nurse employed by the David Umahi Federal University of Health Sciences, Ebonyi State, and not a physiotherapist, as had been reported in some quarters.
He also disclosed that she had been receiving treatment for an existing medical condition at a hospital in Turkey, adding that he personally paid her medical bills.
The minister further revealed that shortly before her death, Habila spoke with her boyfriend and complained of bleeding from her nose.
