Trump’s letter proves Tinubu is working – Presidency

The Presidency has described the recent letter from United States President Donald Trump to President Bola Tinubu as a strong indication of the growing international recognition of Nigeria’s security efforts and strengthening bilateral relations with the United States under the current administration.

Special Adviser to the President on Policy Communication, Daniel Bwala, made the assertion on Wednesday while speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today, where he reacted to the contents of the letter in which President Trump commended Tinubu’s leadership and commitment to combating terrorism.

According to Bwala, the correspondence serves as further validation of the administration’s ongoing reforms and security initiatives.

“The facts speak for themselves. The letter is another confirmation of the progress we are making,” he said.

He stressed that Nigeria’s engagement with the United States has continued to deepen irrespective of public endorsements, noting that the government’s commitment to strengthening diplomatic and security cooperation remains unchanged.

“Even if there had been no letter, our engagement with the United States would have continued because we are already working closely and communicating with them,” Bwala stated.

Drawing an analogy to explain the significance of the letter, he said words of encouragement from a trusted partner help reinforce existing commitments without changing the underlying objective.

“If you are in a relationship and someone writes to encourage you, it strengthens your resolve, but it does not create the commitment. The commitment was already there,” he added.

The Presidency’s remarks followed the release of a letter dated July 6, 2026, in which President Trump praised Tinubu’s leadership in addressing terrorism and insecurity in Nigeria. The letter was made public on Wednesday by the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga.

In the correspondence, Trump thanked Tinubu for his earlier message and commended his administration’s efforts to tackle terrorism, particularly attacks targeting Christian communities.

He described Nigeria as a strategic partner of the United States, emphasising that both countries share a common objective of confronting terrorism and strengthening regional security.

Trump also referenced the US-Nigeria 2026 Defence Cooperation Roadmap, describing it as a key framework for expanding military cooperation and improving counter-terrorism operations.

The US President further disclosed that elite United States Special Operations Forces have been deployed to train Nigerian military personnel, providing them with advanced operational skills, intelligence support and specialised capabilities to strengthen the country’s fight against terrorism.

The letter comes as Nigeria and the United States continue to expand security collaboration through intelligence sharing, joint military training and coordinated counter-terrorism initiatives.

The growing partnership has coincided with recent security successes recorded by Nigerian security agencies, including the rescue of 44 teachers and pupils abducted from schools in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State after spending 56 days in captivity. President Tinubu had commended the operation, stating that the victims were rescued without the payment of ransom.
