Trump’s Letter: Tinubu busy paying American lobbyists – US senator, Ted Cruz says

United States Senator Ted Cruz has accused the administration of President Bola Tinubu of focusing on lobbying efforts in Washington instead of addressing concerns over the persecution of Christians in Nigeria.

Cruz made the allegation in a statement released on Wednesday, claiming that Nigerian government officials have devoted resources to engaging American lobbyists and public relations campaigns rather than responding to concerns raised by US lawmakers and advocacy groups.

The Republican senator alleged that, instead of addressing the issues highlighted by American officials, the Nigerian government had chosen to counter criticism through public relations efforts.

Recall that Cruz recently introduced the Nigeria Religious Freedom Accountability Act, 2025, a proposed legislation that seeks to impose sanctions on Nigerian government officials found to be facilitating the killing of Christians or enforcing laws that infringe on religious freedom, including certain blasphemy-related provisions.

According to the senator, Nigerian authorities have created conditions that encourage violence against Christians and other religious minorities by permitting the enforcement of blasphemy and Sharia-related laws while failing to adequately confront attacks by jihadist groups.

“The US government knows the Nigerian officials responsible for these policies. I have been pushing my bill to sanction them, and President Trump has even ordered military action,” Cruz said.

He further alleged that the Nigerian government remains confident it can maintain the current approach despite growing international criticism, while expressing satisfaction with President Donald Trump’s response to allegations of religious persecution in Nigeria.

The Nigerian government has consistently rejected claims that insecurity in the country is driven by religious persecution, maintaining that security challenges are largely criminal and insurgency-related and that efforts are ongoing to combat terrorism, banditry and other forms of violent crime across the country.
