Ghanaian man jailed for attempting to steal Police armoured vehicle

A Circuit Court in Kwadaso, Kumasi, has sentenced a 26-year-old unemployed man to one month imprisonment after he admitted attempting to steal a police armoured vehicle in Ghana’s Ashanti Region.

The convict, Ebenezer Frimpong, was found guilty after changing his plea from not guilty to guilty during proceedings held on Tuesday, July 21, 2026.

According to Adom Online, Frimpong, a native of Antwi Agyeikrom in the Atwima Mponua District, was arrested on April 15, 2026, shortly after allegedly driving away with the police vehicle.

His conviction followed the submission of a psychiatric evaluation by doctors at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital, which confirmed that he was mentally fit to stand trial.

The psychiatric assessment, which delayed the case for several months, was presented before the court presided over by His Honour Jephthah Appau.

How the incident happened

The incident occurred on April 14, 2026, when General Lance Corporal Joshua Denkyi was transporting an armoured police vehicle, with registration number GP 1131, to a workshop for routine maintenance.

During the journey, the officer reportedly developed a stomach upset and parked the vehicle near Nkawie Market while he went to a nearby pharmacy to purchase medication.

While he was away, Frimpong allegedly entered the vehicle and drove off along the Nkawie–Abuakwa–Kumasi Road.

The police officer immediately raised the alarm, prompting officers of the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) to pursue the stolen vehicle.

The suspect was eventually intercepted and arrested at Mim, near Abuakwa.

Frimpong initially pleaded not guilty when he was first arraigned before the court on May 5, 2026.

However, after changing his plea to guilty, the trial judge confirmed that he fully understood the consequences of his admission before proceeding to sentence him.

Justice Appau said the one-month jail term was influenced by the convict’s youthful age and his decision to plead guilty, which saved the court’s time.

Earlier, police prosecutor ASP Albert Asagre had urged the court to impose an appropriate sentence after the defendant admitted committing the offence.
