I won’t be a ‘spare tyre’ if Obi wins in 2027 – Kwankwaso

Vice-presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso, has said he is not worried about the possibility of vice-presidents being treated as “spare tyres” by their principals if he and the party’s presidential candidate, Peter Obi, win the 2027 election.

Kwankwaso stated this on Sunday during the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) Personality Interview Series in Abuja, expressing confidence in Obi and the understanding reached between them.

The former Kano State governor said the relevance of a vice-president largely depends on the president he works with, stressing that he expects an Obi-Kwankwaso administration to be based on cooperation, trust and effective delegation of responsibilities.

“A president who trusts his vice-president and gives him meaningful responsibilities can achieve more for the country.

“And for me, I don’t think I will be sidelined by His Excellency, Mr Peter Obi, if we win the 2027 election,” he said.

Kwankwaso pointed to his previous experience as deputy speaker, minister and governor, saying the positions had prepared him to work effectively within a leadership structure.

He recalled that while serving as governor of Kano State, he deliberately assigned substantial responsibilities to his deputy to ensure that both of them could contribute effectively to governance.

The former governor said he adopted a similar approach while serving as Minister of Defence, where he allowed the Minister of State to take responsibility for specific areas of the ministry.

According to him, political leaders should avoid greed and the desire to control every aspect of government, arguing that effective delegation enables leaders to achieve more.

Kwankwaso also expressed confidence in Obi, describing him as a politician who was not driven by greed but was interested in leaving behind a legacy of good governance.

He said he would be satisfied with whatever responsibilities were assigned to him as vice-president, stressing that his priority would be serving Nigerians rather than pursuing personal interests.

Kwankwaso maintained that the success of an NDC administration would depend largely on teamwork, mutual trust and the willingness of its leaders to place national interest above personal ambition.
