BREAKING: Tinubu pull out Police from VIP escorts, orders recruitment of 30,000 officers for community security
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has directed that all police officers assigned to guard Very Important Persons (VIPs) across the country be withdrawn and returned to core policing duties in communities.
The president gave the order during a high-level security meeting held on Sunday at the State House in Abuja.
The meeting was attended by top security chiefs, including the Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Waidi Shaibu; Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Sunday Kelvin Aneke; Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun; and the Director-General of the Department of State Services, Tosin Adeola Ajayi.
Under the new policy, VIPs who need armed escorts will now be required to obtain such protection from the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) instead of the Nigeria Police Force.
The move follows growing concerns that many police stations, especially those in remote and vulnerable communities, lack enough personnel to respond effectively to rising security challenges.
The presidency noted that too many officers were attached to individuals rather than providing security for the general public.
As part of broader measures to strengthen internal security, President Tinubu has also approved the recruitment of 30,000 additional police officers.
The federal government is working closely with state governments to upgrade police training facilities across the country.
According to the presidency, the new steps are aimed at improving police presence in all communities and ensuring that officers concentrate on their core duty of protecting lives and property.
