BREAKING: Meta agrees $16.7bn settlement in teen safety case

Published

on

Meta has agreed to pay US states up to $16.7 billion and introduce major new restrictions on how teenagers use Facebook and Instagram, according to a court filing on Wednesday.

The proposed settlement, filed in a federal court in California, would bring an end to a major trial involving the social media giant.

The case was brought by a coalition of 29 US states, which accused Meta of deliberately designing its platforms to keep young users engaged, misleading the public about potential risks and illegally collecting personal data from children under the age of 13.

If approved, the settlement would resolve the states’ claims against Meta while introducing new limits aimed at protecting teenagers on its platforms.
