United Bank for Africa Plc (UBA) has welcomed Emmanuel Nnorom as its new Group Chairman, following his assumption of office after the retirement of Tony Elumelu.

The bank announced Nnorom’s appointment in a social media post on Wednesday, describing him as an experienced business executive and chartered accountant with more than 40 years of professional experience.

Nnorom officially took over as Group Chairman on August 21, 2026, succeeding Elumelu, who retired after reaching the maximum tenure allowed for non-executive directors under the Central Bank of Nigeria’s corporate governance guidelines.

Welcoming him to the position, UBA said, “We welcome Mr. Emmanuel N. Nnorom as the new Group Chairman of United Bank for Africa Plc.

“A seasoned business leader and chartered accountant with over four decades of experience.”

The bank noted that Nnorom had spent more than eight years in senior leadership positions within the UBA Group, including as Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of UBA Africa, Group Chief Operating Officer and Group Chief Financial Officer.

It added that he also served as a Non-Executive Director on the UBA board.

“With his wealth of experience and understanding of UBA’s journey, Mr. Nnorom takes the helm at an important moment in the Group’s continued growth across Africa and beyond,” the bank stated.

UBA had earlier announced Nnorom’s appointment as Elumelu’s successor, with the appointment taking effect on August 21.

Nnorom joined the UBA board as a Non-Executive Director in 2024 after serving in several executive positions within the group.

During his time with UBA, he served as Group Chief Operating Officer, Executive Director (Group Executive Office), Executive Director (Finance), Executive Director (Risk), and Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of UBA Africa.

As CEO of UBA Africa, Nnorom oversaw the bank’s operations across several African countries, contributing to its pan-African expansion.

Outside UBA, he has held senior positions in major Nigerian companies and financial institutions.

He served as President and Chief Executive Officer of Transnational Corporation Plc between September 2014 and May 2017 and has been the Group Chief Executive Officer of Heirs Holdings since June 2017.

His banking career also includes senior management positions at Standard Trust Bank, now UBA, Diamond Bank, NUB International Bank and Liberty Merchant Bank.

Nnorom is a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria and an Honorary Member of the Chartered Institute of Bankers of Nigeria.

He studied at Templeton College, Oxford, where he completed executive leadership and management programmes.

UBA said his appointment came at an important period in the group’s continued growth across Africa and beyond.
