FBI files won’t decide 2027 election, Nigerians vote will – Tinubu’s lawyer Afolabi says

A member of President Bola Tinubu’s legal team in the United States, Wole Afolabi, SAN, has played down concerns over the President’s records with US law-enforcement agencies, saying the 2027 presidential election will ultimately be decided by the ability of candidates to convince Nigerians.

Afolabi stated this during an appearance on Channels Television’s Sunday Politics amid ongoing legal proceedings over the proposed release of records held by the United States Department of Justice, Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) concerning allegations linked to Tinubu.

The lawyer’s comments come as Tinubu seeks to prevent the release of additional records requested by American transparency activist Aaron Greenspan under the Freedom of Information Act.

Greenspan has sought access to records relating to investigations involving Tinubu, including FBI and DEA documents.

Tinubu, who joined the case as an intervenor, has argued through his lawyers that the records contain private information protected under US law and should remain redacted or withheld.

Afolabi, however, suggested that the documents would not determine the outcome of the 2027 presidential election, stressing that the focus should be on the candidates’ ability to present convincing programmes to Nigerians.

The lawyer’s position comes amid growing political controversy over Tinubu’s US records, with opposition figures demanding that the documents be made public and arguing that Nigerians have a right to know about the President’s past.

The controversy has also become part of the wider political battle ahead of the 2027 presidential election, with Tinubu expected to seek re-election against major opposition contenders.

While the legal battle over the records continues in the United States, Tinubu has consistently denied wrongdoing in relation to the allegations surrounding his past.

The case remains before the US District Court for the District of Columbia, where the court is considering arguments from Greenspan, US government agencies and Tinubu’s legal team over the extent to which the requested records should be disclosed.
