Nigeria has recorded 14 new confirmed cases of Lassa fever, bringing the total number of infections reported so far this year to 1,035.

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) disclosed this in its Week 33 Lassa fever situation report released in Abuja on Tuesday.

According to the report, the new cases were recorded between August 10 and August 16 in Bauchi, Benue, Ondo and Edo states.

The NCDC also reported that 252 people have died from the disease so far, pushing the case fatality rate to 24.4 per cent.

The current fatality rate is higher than the 18.6 per cent recorded during the same period in 2025.

According to the agency, the 14 new cases represented an increase from four cases reported during epidemiological Week 32, when cases were recorded in Ondo and Edo states, stressing that in Week 32, cumulative infections reached 1,021, with 240 deaths and a case fatality rate of 23.5 per cent.

It further explained, “The Week 32 figure represents a decline from 17 confirmed cases recorded during epidemiological Week 31, indicating fluctuations in weekly transmission.”

By Week 33, the agency pointed out that 23 states had reported at least one confirmed Lassa fever case across 117 local government areas.

As Lassa fever remained a significant public health concern across affected states, the agency assured of its continued surveillance and response activities.
