2027: Any LG chairman who fails to deliver victory for APC, Tinubu will lose his seat – Gov Nwifuru

Ebonyi State Governor, Francis Nwifuru, has threatened to remove any local government chairman who fails to secure victory for the All Progressives Congress (APC) in his or her council during the 2027 elections.

Nwifuru issued the warning in Abakaliki, the state capital, while inaugurating the newly elected chairpersons and vice-chairpersons of the state’s 13 local government areas.

The governor said the council chairmen would be held responsible for the electoral performance of the APC in their respective areas.

“Any chairman who fails to win his council will be removed from office and replaced with a councillor. I want this information to be on the headlines of newspapers because, as politicians, we would not speak in secret,” Nwifuru said.

He added that the chairmen were aware of the party’s expected victory across the state and warned them against allowing opposition parties to gain ground in their councils.

“The chairmen know we would win in the state, and if they choose to sleep and allow others to take their areas, they would be removed,” the governor said.

Nwifuru urged the newly inaugurated council officials to work towards securing what he described as a 100 per cent vote for the APC in the 2027 elections.

He also cautioned the chairmen against engaging in unnecessary rivalry with their deputies, stressing the need for cooperation in the administration of their councils.

Addressing the vice-chairpersons, the governor described them as “spare tyres inside the car boot,” advising them to remain supportive of their principals and only assume full responsibilities when the chairmen are unable to function.

“You should always be available to the chairmen and ask them about your council’s daily activities. Do not listen to gossip and ill advice from your friends against your chairmen because that will destroy your relationship with them,” he said.

Nwifuru also cited the political trajectory of his deputy governor, who he said previously served as a local government chairperson before rising to the position of deputy governor.

According to him, her performance as a council chairperson helped demonstrate her capacity for greater responsibilities.

“She performed in ways people saw her and believed she could do the work of a deputy governor. My deputy is doing the work perfectly and presently enjoying the position,” he said.

Responding on behalf of the newly inaugurated chairpersons, Timothy Nwachi, chairman of Afikpo Local Government Area, thanked the governor and other APC stakeholders for giving them the opportunity to serve.

Nwachi pledged that the chairmen would justify the confidence placed in them and work towards delivering a decisive victory for the ruling party in 2027.

“We pledge to justify the confidence reposed in us and especially ensure that APC records a landslide in 2027,” he said.

Among the newly inaugurated council chairpersons are Osborne Umahi, son of the Minister of Works, David Umahi, and Chidi Nwode, who is related to the governor’s family through his marriage to Nwifuru’s wife.
