2027: Gawuna’s camp dismisses APC defection claims, reaffirms loyalty to NDC, Obi, Kwankwaso

The campaign team of Nasiru Yusuf Gawuna, the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) senatorial candidate for Kano Central, has dismissed the recent move by some politicians associated with his political camp to return to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

In a statement signed by the Director-General and chairman of the campaign team, Saleh Adamu Kwaru, the group said the politicians involved had severed ties with Gawuna’s official political structure since June.

Kwaru alleged that the affected politicians had made personal demands which Gawuna rejected before they began political consultations with the African Democratic Congress (ADC) without the candidate’s knowledge or authorisation.

According to the campaign team, the group later turned its attention to negotiating a return to the APC after the alleged arrangement with the ADC failed.

The team maintained that Gawuna’s campaign structures for the 2027 election had already been established independently of the politicians involved, arguing that their departure would not affect the campaign.

It also claimed that Gawuna’s political movement was attracting new political figures, community leaders and grassroots mobilisers across the 44 local government areas of Kano State.

The statement followed reports that a group of prominent politicians previously associated with Gawuna had moved towards the APC, sparking a disagreement over their continued status within his political camp.

The politicians recently paid a solidarity visit to Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf and his deputy, Murtala Sule Garo.

The delegation was led by Muhammad Badaru Umar and included NDC Vice Chairman in Kano State, Ali Datti Yako; Mansur Isah Gawuna; Uba Tanko Mijinyawa, popularly known as Uba Danzainab; Aminu Umar Faruk; Sani Jibrin; Salisu Muhammad; Musa Sani Indabo; Muhammad Kabir Bala; Hassan Abba Abdullahi and Abdurrahman Muhammad.

Mansur Isah Gawuna, one of those involved in the move, told Daily Trust that their decision was based on their individual political interests rather than a dispute over their relationship with Gawuna.

“It is our personal interest we are looking at. We are not okay with the arrangement of giving Nasiru Yusuf Gawuna a senatorial ticket, then what are we going to get?” he said.

He added that Gawuna would retain his campaign structure regardless of whether they remained with him.

“Everybody wants to progress, so with us or without us he will get what he will get as far as election is concerned. Already he has his campaign council and they have started work,” he said.

Meanwhile, the Kano State Government described the politicians as members of Gawuna’s political team and said their anticipated return to the APC would strengthen the party ahead of the 2027 elections.

The development adds to the growing political realignments in Kano as political parties and major contenders continue to reposition ahead of the 2027 general election.
