FCT Schools not closing, says Wike, official responsible for fake memo suspended

Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has suspended Danlami Hayyo, the mandate secretary for education, after reports claimed that government schools in Abuja were instructed to shut down on November 28.

Earlier on Tuesday, a memo signed by Alhassan ordered all public senior secondary schools in the FCT to close on or before Friday, November 28, citing urgent security concerns.

The memo directed principals and school heads to immediately end academic activities and dismiss students “in an orderly and safe manner.”

It was titled Urgent Need for Early Closure of Schools Due to Security Concerns.

However, in a statement, Lere Olayinka, senior special assistant on public communications and social media to the FCT minister, said the administration had debunked the report, stressing that “no such decision was taken at any level of the administration.”

He also said Nancy Sabanti Nathan, the acting head of service, has been asked to take disciplinary action against Aishatu Sani Alhassan, the director of school services, in line with civil service rules.

Describing the claim of early school closure as “false and misleading,” Olayinka urged parents, students and school authorities to disregard the rumour.

He added that the approved academic calendar remains unchanged.

The administration assured residents, especially students, of adequate security across the territory.

Olayinka noted that the minister has ordered the resumption of Operation Sweep and other security measures to boost safety around schools and communities.
