Guinea-Bissau thrash sloppy Super Eagles of Nigeria 3-0 in AFCON Qualifier

The Super Eagles suffered a heavy defeat on Tuesday as Guinea-Bissau thrashed Nigeria 3-0 in their second Group L match of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers.

Nigeria went into the encounter hoping to build on their 2-1 comeback victory over Madagascar in their opening qualifying fixture.

However, the Super Eagles struggled throughout the match, with Guinea-Bissau taking advantage of defensive lapses and a disjointed Nigerian performance to secure a convincing victory.

The defeat represents a major setback for Nigeria in Group L, where Guinea-Bissau had also opened their campaign with a 2-0 victory over Tanzania.

Nigeria had started their qualifying campaign on a positive note in Uyo, coming from behind to defeat Madagascar through goals from debutants George Ilenikhena and Moses Usor.

But against Guinea-Bissau, the Super Eagles were unable to reproduce that comeback performance and were punished for their mistakes as the hosts claimed all three points.

The result leaves Nigeria with three points from their opening two matches, while Guinea-Bissau move into a stronger position in the battle for the qualifying spot from the group.

Tanzania, which is co-hosting the 2027 AFCON alongside Kenya and Uganda, has already secured an automatic place at the tournament. As a result, Nigeria, Guinea-Bissau and Madagascar are competing for the additional qualification spot in Group L.

The Super Eagles will now have to regroup and improve their performances in their remaining qualifying fixtures as they continue their bid to reach the 2027 AFCON finals.
