‘Nebuchadnezzar Coalition’: Makinde campaign mocks APC alliance, says imminent defeat awaits Tinubu
The Makinde-Daura Presidential Campaign Organisation (MDPCO) has described the All Progressives Congress (APC) Presidential Campaign Council as a “Nebuchadnezzar Coalition”, arguing that the alliance would not guarantee President Bola Tinubu’s re-election in the 2027 general election.
The organisation, which is campaigning for Seyi Makinde, the presidential candidate of the Allied People’s Movement (APM), said the APC’s expanding political alliance would not shield the president from public dissatisfaction over economic hardship, insecurity and concerns about his administration’s performance.
The campaign organisation stated its position in a statement issued on Wednesday and signed by its Director of Strategic Communications, Richard Ihediwa.
It described members of the APC campaign council as “internationally discredited and politically inconsistent characters and corrupt politicians”, accusing the ruling party of relying on political influence rather than public trust and democratic legitimacy.
“This ‘Nebuchadnezzar Coalition’ is headed for the rocks as it cannot whitewash the failures of the Tinubu administration, nor rewrite the painful realities confronting citizens,” the statement said.
The MDPCO argued that the size of the APC campaign council and the political influence of its members would not necessarily translate into votes, insisting that Nigerians would assess the president based on the impact of his administration on their daily lives.
It listed poverty, unemployment, hunger and poor educational outcomes among the challenges it said the APC would struggle to address during the campaign.
The organisation also cited figures it attributed to the World Bank, claiming that 140 million Nigerians, representing 63 per cent of the population, were living in multidimensional poverty, while 113 million experienced deprivation in health, education and other basic necessities.
It questioned how the ruling party would respond to families struggling to afford food and young Nigerians facing unemployment.
The campaign organisation further referenced a reported Federal Government admission that 70 per cent of Nigerian children below the age of 10 could not read and understand a simple sentence, describing the situation as evidence of a serious human capital challenge.
“These are not mere statistics but damning indicators of the depth of Nigeria’s socio-economic distress and the erosion of human capital,” the statement said.
The MDPCO maintained that political alliances alone would not resolve the country’s economic and social challenges, accusing the APC of mistaking political dominance for widespread public acceptance.
According to the organisation, electoral success depends on citizens’ confidence in the government rather than the number of influential politicians backing a candidate.
“Elections are not won by the size of a campaign council or the number of powerful figures gathered. They are won by the confidence of citizens who must ultimately decide whether their lives have improved under the government seeking their votes,” the statement added.
The organisation also argued that neither incumbency nor political alliances could eliminate public grievances or prevent voters from demanding accountability at the ballot box.
It said its campaign was focused on Makinde’s RESET NIGERIA agenda, which it described as a programme built around service, productivity, accountability, dignity of life and prosperity.
