‘You Betrayed Osun People’ — Adeleke, Davido face backlash over support for Tinubu

Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke and his nephew, Afrobeats star David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido, have faced criticism on social media following the governor’s reported decision to support President Bola Tinubu’s re-election bid in 2027.

The backlash followed reports that Adeleke had pledged to deliver Osun State for Tinubu in the 2027 presidential election and had been appointed coordinator of the City Boy Movement in the state.

The governor was also reportedly included in the All Progressives Congress (APC) Presidential Campaign Council, a development that has sparked debate among Nigerians over his political alignment.

Some critics questioned the governor’s position, recalling his opposition to the APC during the Osun governorship election. Others argued that supporting the APC at the federal level while opposing it in state politics amounted to political inconsistency.

Davido was also drawn into the controversy after some of his old posts criticising the APC resurfaced on X. In one of the posts circulating online, the singer reportedly wrote: “Anybody supporting APC in Osun is an enemy of progress.”

The resurfaced post prompted some users to question whether the singer would publicly address his uncle’s reported support for Tinubu.

Nigerians React on X

Several users expressed disappointment over Adeleke’s reported political realignment, while others criticised Davido for what they perceived as silence on the issue.

An X user, @kokomatic, argued that political reconciliation could be a strategic move, suggesting that Adeleke’s possible alignment with the APC could ease political tensions and reduce the ruling party’s campaign burden.

However, @AwoOluu criticised the governor’s reported decision, arguing that supporters who stood by him during the Osun governorship contest could feel let down by his latest political position.

The user also questioned Davido’s credibility, linking the singer’s earlier criticism of the APC to his uncle’s reported support for the party.

Another user, @SEA KING, directed criticism at both the governor and the singer, describing them as opponents of progress.

Similarly, @samuelorio accused the Adeleke family of political inconsistency, questioning why they would oppose the APC in Osun State while supporting the party at the national level.

Other users, including @boxypiper and @pbtips, raised similar questions about the apparent difference between the family’s state-level and federal political positions.

Meanwhile, @EMOJ_01 argued that Nigerians should make independent political decisions rather than rely on celebrities to guide their choices at the ballot box.

Some reactions focused on Davido’s perceived silence. @Francis133 referenced a video by social media commentator VeryDarkMan, arguing that the singer’s earlier opposition to the APC during the Osun governorship election had become difficult to reconcile with his uncle’s reported support for the party.

Another user, @GreatCbscjim, urged Davido to address the controversy, while @unkle_renzoo said the singer would ordinarily have been expected to make public statements in defence of his uncle.

Other commenters took a different view, interpreting Adeleke’s reported political move as a calculated strategy. User @atetemarho described the development as an example of political manoeuvring, while @callmeuchman said the controversy reflected a wider pattern of politicians speaking out when political circumstances favour them.

Some users also made allegations about the governor’s motives and the possible implications of his support for Tinubu. However, such claims were not substantiated in the reactions cited.

As of the time of this report, the reactions largely reflected individual opinions and criticisms expressed on social media. The comments do not, by themselves, establish the reasons behind Adeleke’s reported political decision or confirm claims about any agreement involving the governor.

The controversy has renewed online debate about political consistency, party alliances and the role of celebrities in Nigeria’s political discourse ahead of the 2027 general election.
