COAS arrives Borno as Military moves to clear terrorist camps, rescue abductees
The Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Waidi Shuaibu, arrived in Maiduguri, the Borno State capital, on Saturday, October 17, amid renewed efforts by security agencies to rescue abducted Nigerians and dismantle terrorist and bandit camps across the country.
Shuaibu arrived in the state capital at about 11am, 48 hours after President Bola Tinubu directed security agencies to intensify efforts to rescue all abducted persons and ensure that no terrorist or bandit camp remained anywhere in Nigeria.
Very Nigerian had reported on October 15 that the Minister of Defence, Christopher Musa, disclosed the President’s directive after a security meeting at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.
According to Musa, Tinubu gave the order to the heads of security agencies during the meeting, stressing the need for urgent action to secure the country and rescue Nigerians held captive by criminal groups.
Musa said Tinubu also directed the service chiefs and other security heads to guarantee a safe environment for Nigerians to vote in the elections scheduled for January.
“The directive from the President is: all of us must go all out to fish out and rescue all those that have been abducted, kidnapped, wherever they are.
“There shouldn’t be any camp of any terrorists or bandits anywhere in Nigeria,” he said.
Although it has yet to be established whether Shuaibu’s visit is connected to the directive, our correspondent gathered that the army chief would meet with theatre, field and unit commanders across the state.
