Catholic priest dies after Jesus’ statue falls on him during mass in Ecuador (video)
A Catholic priest, Father Patricio Alfredo Sánchez Molinari, has died after a crucifix fell on him while he was celebrating Mass in Guayaquil, Ecuador.
The incident reportedly occurred on Saturday as the priest presided over the service, which was being livestreamed to members of the congregation and other viewers.
Footage circulating on social media showed Molinari addressing worshippers during the Mass before the crucifix fell on him.
The Archdiocese of Guayaquil confirmed his death in a statement published on social media on Sunday.
The archdiocese described the deceased priest as a beloved member of the Catholic community who served as parish priest of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church in the Central Vicariate.
“We announce that our beloved Fr. Patricio Alfredo Sánchez Molinari, CSsR., who served as parish priest of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church in the Central Vicariate, has departed for the Father’s House to rejoice in His presence and glory,” the statement read.
The archdiocese also offered a prayer for his soul, saying: “Eternal rest grant unto him, O Lord. And let perpetual light shine upon him. May he rest in peace. Amen.”
