The Founder and Proprietor of Gregory University, Uturu, Abia State, Professor Gregory Ikechukwu Ibe, has died at the age of 63 following a prolonged illness, his family has announced.
Ibe, who was the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) governorship candidate in Abia State during the 2023 general election, reportedly died on Sunday.
His death was announced on Monday in a statement issued by the royal family of HRH Eze Cyril Ibe, Okwelube I of Amaokwe Achara Autonomous Community.
The family described the late professor as a distinguished academic, administrator, philanthropist, entrepreneur and educationist who dedicated his life to expanding access to education, supporting the less privileged and serving humanity.
“Through Gregory University Uturu, Skill ‘G’ Ltd., Innov8 Hub and other initiatives, he touched thousands of lives, leaving an enduring legacy in education and community development,” the statement said.
Ibe is survived by six children and seven grandchildren.
The family expressed appreciation for the prayers and messages of condolence received since his death. It also appealed for continued prayers for the peaceful repose of his soul and for strength for those mourning him.
According to the statement, details of the funeral arrangements would be announced in due course. The family also urged the public to respect its privacy during the mourning period.
Beyond his work in education and business, Ibe was a prominent figure in Abia State politics. During the 2023 governorship election, he advocated for power to shift to Abia North, citing the Abia Charter of Equity.
He reportedly began experiencing health challenges as political activities ahead of the election gathered momentum. Since then, he had made few public appearances while battling the illness.
However, he attended his mother’s burial earlier this year.
A prominent Igbo entrepreneur and investor, Ibe was also known for his philanthropic activities, particularly his support for undergraduates receiving scholarships at Gregory University.
His death marks the loss of a figure whose work spanned education, entrepreneurship, philanthropy and community development.
