Momodu says Atiku has more national experience than Tinubu, Obi
A chieftain of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Dele Momodu, has argued that former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar has more national-level political experience than President Bola Tinubu and former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
Momodu made the assertion during an interview on Eagle 102.5 FM, Ilese-Ijebu, on Wednesday, claiming that Tinubu’s experience before becoming president was largely concentrated in Lagos State.
According to him, the president underestimated the complexities of governing Nigeria by approaching the country’s challenges as though they were similar to those of Lagos.
“What I’m trying to say is that Tinubu’s experience was limited to Lagos, and that is why when he became president, he thought Nigeria was Lagos. And he has found out now that Nigeria is not Lagos,” Momodu said.
The ADC chieftain described Atiku as the most experienced among the three politicians, citing his lengthy political career, involvement in the country’s democratic process and tenure as vice-president.
Momodu recalled that Atiku contested the Social Democratic Party (SDP) presidential primary in 1992 against the late Moshood Kashimawo Olawale Abiola but eventually stepped down in Abiola’s favour.
He said Atiku accepted the outcome without creating a political crisis, even after he was not selected as Abiola’s running mate, describing his conduct as a demonstration of political maturity and commitment to democratic values.
“He is the only one who started from around 1992, contested the SDP primary against Abiola and stepped down with uncommon equanimity. He did not make any noise,” he said.
Momodu also highlighted Atiku’s role in the formation of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and his tenure as vice-president under former President Olusegun Obasanjo from 1999 to 2007.
Comparing Atiku’s record with that of Obi, the former presidential aspirant argued that Obi’s political experience was primarily associated with his tenure as governor of Anambra State, while Atiku had served at the highest levels of the federal government.
“Peter Obi has tried his best in Anambra, while Atiku’s best is at the level of vice president controlling the economy of Nigeria. The difference is clear. He has matured in experience and exposure,” Momodu said.
He also criticised the economic performance of the Tinubu administration, arguing that Nigerians were yet to experience the prosperity promised by the government.
Momodu said the country’s economic challenges raised questions about the president’s leadership and whether he should seek another term in office.
“Well, we are yet to see that prosperity, and if yesterday would determine today and tomorrow, it is obvious that Tinubu should retire now and let someone else do it,” he added.
His remarks come ahead of the 2027 general election, as political parties and aspirants continue to position themselves for the presidential contest.
