Gwagwalada hit by severe heatwave amid water scarcity, power outages
By Oladosu Adebola Oluwaseun from Abuja-Nigeria
GWAGWALADA — Life in Gwagwalada has become a daily struggle for survival as extreme weather conditions coincide with severe failures in basic public infrastructure.
Even before recent weather forecasts warned of severe conditions, Gwagwalada was already sweltering under blistering heatwaves. Now, the intensity of the heat has escalated to unprecedented levels, leaving thousands of residents searching desperately for relief.
Compounding the crisis is a complete breakdown of municipal utilities.
”Presently, there is no water available in Gwagwalada, and the electricity supply is completely inadequate,” explained Mrs. James, a long-time resident suffering under the current conditions.
Without electricity to run fans or power water pumps, families are left with few options to cool down indoors. Driven out of their stifling rooms by suffocating night temperatures, many community members have been forced into taking dangerous risks.
”Most of the time, we sleep outside on open porches and outdoors just to get a breath of air, despite the growing insecurity around us,” another resident shared.
With no immediate relief from the heat forecast in the coming days, community members are appealing directly to municipal and state authorities for immediate emergency measures, including restoring basic power grids and delivering clean water supplies.
”The government must step in urgently to address the crisis we find ourselves in,” insisted Solomon Daniel, a resident of Gwagwalada. “We cannot survive like this much longer.”
