Death of NUJ member sparks fresh call for road safety enforcement in FCT
The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), FCT Council, has received with shock and deep sorrow the untimely death of one of its members, Mr. Sunday Olatuyi, who lost his life after being knocked down by a Toyota Corolla with registration number ABUJA RBC 128 AM at the Lugbe Bus Stop, Abuja.
The tragic incident occurred on Saturday night, December 20, 2025, as Olatuyi was reportedly heading home after closing from work. He was said to be in the company of a friend when a reckless driver struck him at the busy bus stop.
Olatuyi, aged 40, hailed from Odo-Oro Ekiti in Ikole Local Government Area of Ekiti State. He is survived by his wife, a seven-month-old daughter, Eniola, and his aged mother.
Until his death, he was a Senior Cameraman with Advocate Broadcasting Network (ADBN Television). He had previously worked with Ben TV and was widely regarded as a dedicated professional who carried out his duties with commitment and integrity.
The NUJ FCT Council described his passing as a painful loss, not only to the union but to the journalism profession at large. It noted that Olatuyi was an active union member whose dedication to the ideals of journalism and participation in union activities would be deeply missed.
The council condemned the circumstances surrounding his death and expressed grave concern over the increasing cases of reckless driving and disregard for human lives on roads within the Federal Capital Territory.
In a statement, the NUJ FCT Council called for an immediate, thorough and transparent investigation into the incident and demanded that the Nigeria Police Force promptly prosecute the driver involved in accordance with the law.
“Justice must not only be done but must also be seen to be done, to serve as a deterrent to others,” the council said.
The NUJ FCT Council extended its heartfelt condolences to Olatuyi’s immediate family, the management and staff of ADBN Television, the Correspondents’ Chapel, the Society of Practicing Cameramen, as well as friends and colleagues of the deceased.
The council assured the bereaved family of its solidarity and support during this difficult period and pledged to continue to follow up on the case until justice is served.
May his gentle soul rest in perfect peace.
