Christian Killings: Why Nigeria must push back against the religious genocide label

President Bola Tinubu

The recent statement by U.S. President Donald Trump, designating Nigeria once again as a “Country of Particular Concern” over alleged persecution of Christians, has drawn sharp reactions from the Nigerian government and religious leaders alike.

While concerns about violence against Christians cannot be dismissed, Trump’s sweeping description of Nigeria as a nation of “mass slaughter” driven by “radical Islamists” oversimplifies a far more complex security reality.

In his post on Truth Social, Trump claimed that Christianity was facing an “existential threat” in Nigeria and that “thousands of Christians are being killed,” asserting that America “cannot stand by” while such atrocities occur.

He announced that he had directed U.S. lawmakers to investigate the alleged killings.

Yet, his claims fail to reflect the multifaceted nature of Nigeria’s ongoing security crisis, one that affects both Christians and Muslims across different regions.

Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, rightly countered that portraying Nigeria’s insecurity as a religious war is inaccurate and harmful.

The truth is that terrorism in Nigeria has long transcended religious boundaries.

Groups like Boko Haram, Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP), and bandit militias have targeted mosques, churches, schools, and markets alike. Their victims include men, women, and children from every faith and ethnic background.

Official data from Nigerian authorities show that between May 2023 and February 2025, over 13,500 terrorists were killed, nearly 10,000 hostages rescued, and hundreds of extremist leaders captured or convicted.

These numbers reveal an active fight against terrorism, not government indifference to faith-based violence. Nigeria’s struggle is against extremism and criminality, not Christianity or Islam.

Even Trump’s own Senior Adviser on Arab and African Affairs, Massad Boulos, who met with President Bola Tinubu earlier this month, dismissed the genocide narrative.

He emphasized that terrorism in Nigeria “has no colour, no religion, and no tribe.”

His position reflects what most Nigerians understand: that the country’s violent conflicts are rooted in poverty, inequality, political corruption, and weak governance, not a campaign of religious extermination.

Nevertheless, the concerns raised by the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) cannot be ignored.

Archbishop Daniel Okoh, the CAN President, has consistently called for greater protection of Christian communities and justice for victims of attacks.

His words reflect the pain of families devastated by recurring violence. The Nigerian government must therefore continue to demonstrate, through action and transparency, that every Nigerian life matters equally.

The Senate’s move to establish a 12-member ad-hoc committee to investigate the allegations is a welcome step.

Its findings should be data-driven, fair, and shared with international partners to correct distorted perceptions about Nigeria’s security challenges.

Diplomacy must replace defensiveness, and facts must replace fear.

Nigeria must not allow external narratives, however influential, to redefine its reality.

The world should see beyond the simplistic labels of “Christian versus Muslim.” What the country faces is a broader fight against terror, poverty, and disunity.

And in that struggle, all Nigerians, regardless of faith, remain both victims and heroes.
