The Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Council, Comrade Grace Ike, has reaffirmed her administration’s commitment to the welfare of journalists, as the council distributed over 600 bags of rice to members in Abuja to celebrate the Christmas season.

The distribution, which has become an annual welfare initiative under her leadership, was aimed at easing the impact of prevailing economic challenges on journalists, while strengthening unity and solidarity within the council.

Earlier, Comrade Ike, alongside members of the NUJ FCT Executive Council, held an end-of-year interactive session with members of the State Executive Council (SEC), made up of chairmen and secretaries of the various chapels. During the meeting, she briefed members on achievements recorded by the council in the outgoing year, particularly the ongoing construction and remodelling of the NUJ Congress Hall.

She called for sustained cooperation among members, stressing that unity and collective responsibility remain critical to strengthening the council and consolidating existing gains.

The meeting also witnessed a unanimous vote of confidence in Comrade Ike’s leadership, which SEC members described as proactive, pragmatic, purposeful and performance-driven.

Addressing journalists during the rice distribution exercise, Comrade Ike described the gesture as more than a seasonal activity, but a deliberate demonstration of the council’s commitment to members’ welfare.

“It is with immense joy and gratitude that we gather today for this special moment of sharing and solidarity,” she said. “On behalf of the NUJ FCT Council, I am proud to announce the distribution of over 600 bags of rice to our members as we usher in the Christmas season.”

She noted that the initiative, now in its second year, had continued to make a positive impact on members and their families.

“This marks the second consecutive year we have undertaken this initiative, a tradition born from our collective resolve to bring smiles to the faces of our members amid life’s challenges,” she said.

According to her, the council is determined to ensure that no journalist is left behind, especially during a season that symbolises love, compassion and generosity.

“These bags of rice represent not just sustenance for the festive table, but a symbol of our unwavering support for journalists who daily uphold the values of truth, accountability and public service,” she added.

Comrade Ike also reminded members of the essence of unionism and collective solidarity at a time when journalists continue to face professional and personal challenges.

“As we approach Christmas, let this act remind us of the true essence of our union: solidarity in service,” she said. “We recognise your sacrifices in defending press freedom and amplifying the voices of the voiceless, and it is our responsibility to stand by you.”

She expressed appreciation to sponsors, partners and members of the Executive Council for their support, noting that their collective efforts were helping to strengthen the culture of care within the NUJ FCT Council.

As members received their bags of rice, the NUJ FCT Chairman urged them to embrace the spirit of the season and move forward with renewed unity and purpose.

“Merry Christmas in advance, and may this season bring peace, prosperity and renewed strength for the year ahead,” she said.

The initiative once again underscores the NUJ FCT Council’s resolve to prioritise journalists’ welfare while promoting unity, compassion and shared responsibility within the union.
