BREAKING: Tinubu appoints Rotimi Oyedepo as Director of Public Prosecutions

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the appointment of Mr Rotimi Iseoluwa Oyedepo, SAN, as the new Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) in the Federal Ministry of Justice.

The appointment follows Oyedepo’s successful transfer of service from the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to the mainstream Federal Civil Service. A letter dated December 23, and signed by Omolabake Mafe on behalf of the Chairman of the Federal Civil Service Commission, stated that the appointment was made in the public interest.

The development was formally announced on Tuesday by the Director of Information and Public Relations at the State House, Mr Abiodun Oladunjoye.

Oyedepo will assume office following the retirement of the incumbent DPP, Mr Abubakar Babadoko, who is expected to complete the mandatory eight-year tenure as a director on December 31, 2025.

A graduate of Law from the University of Ilorin in 2007, Oyedepo was called to the Nigerian Bar in 2008 after attending the Nigerian Law School. He brings over 15 years of professional experience from the EFCC, where he built a reputation for prosecuting complex economic and financial crime cases.

During his time at the anti-graft agency, Oyedepo served in several strategic roles, including Head of the Monitoring Unit, and was a key member of the Federal Government’s legal team in the landmark arbitration case involving Process and Industrial Development (P&ID) against the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

His career has been marked by notable recognitions, including being named EFCC Outstanding Staff of the Year in 2014 and Best Financial Crimes Prosecutor in 2019.

According to the Presidency, Oyedepo’s appointment is expected to strengthen the capacity of the Federal Ministry of Justice, reduce the government’s reliance on external legal counsel for major prosecutions, and promote greater coherence and consistency in the Federal Government’s legal strategy.
