Despite AFCON exit, Abdul Samad Rabiu donates $500,000 to Super Eagles
Chairman of BUA Group, Abdul Samad Rabiu, has announced that he will still donate $500,000 to the Super Eagles, despite Nigeria’s semi-final defeat to Morocco at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
The Super Eagles’ campaign came to an end on Wednesday after they lost 4-2 on penalties to the host nation following a tense goalless draw after extra time.
Nigeria missed two spot-kicks in the shootout, with Samuel Chukwueze and Bruno Onyemaechi failing to convert, allowing Morocco to book a place in the final.
Ahead of the encounter, Rabiu had pledged a $500,000 reward if the Super Eagles defeated Morocco, with an additional $50,000 promised for every goal scored during the match.
However, in a message shared on his X (formerly Twitter) account after the defeat, the billionaire businessman said he would still honour the pledge as a mark of appreciation for the team’s effort and commitment.
According to Rabiu, the donation is meant to recognise the players’ dedication and the pride they brought to Nigerians throughout the tournament.
“You fought with your hearts, gave your all, and showed true courage and determination on the pitch,” he said.
“Though it wasn’t meant to be this time, you have made every Nigerian proud. Sometimes, even our best efforts don’t bring the outcome we hope for, but the spirit, passion, and unity you displayed are what truly matter.”
He added that the team’s performance deserved celebration, noting that they left everything on the field in pursuit of national glory.
The Super Eagles will now turn their attention to the third-place playoff, where they are scheduled to face Egypt on Saturday, as they seek to end the tournament on a positive note.
