‘There is no independent woman’ – Actress Mary Njoku speaks out

Nollywood actress and filmmaker Mary Njoku has said there is really no such thing as an “independent woman”.

In a post shared on her Instagram page, the actress explained that what is often described as independence in women usually comes from the absence of reliable support, rather than a deliberate personal decision.

She noted that no human being truly wants to go through life alone, but added that many women are forced to stand on their own when they do not have dependable people around them.

“There is really no such thing as an ‘independent woman’. Independence is not a preference; it is usually a response. No human truly wants to do life alone. We become independent when we do not have dependable people around us,” she wrote.

She further urged people to pause before labeling a woman as “overly self-sufficient”, stressing that such traits are often learned when reliability is missing.

Njoku added that no one chooses to remain in “isolation” if they have people who consistently show up.

“So before labeling a woman as ‘independent’ or ‘overly self-sufficient’, it is worth asking why. Are you dependable? Because when someone shows up consistently, nobody chooses isolation,” she wrote.

“Independence is learned in the absence of reliability. She is strong because she has to be. Be dependable, and watch her strength soften into trust.”

The actress is married to Jason Njoku, the CEO of Iroko TV
